Issue 'Suggestd quit unexpectedly'

'Suggestd quit unexpectedly'

'Suggestd quit unexpectedly' is an error message that some Mac users may begin to encounter suddenly. The frequency at which the error appears could vary greatly - while some report seeing it only a couple of times per day; others claim that it pops up every minute or so. Dealing with this issue could be a hassle. Even determining the underlying cause could prove to be an arduous process.

Let’s start by clarifying what 'suggestd' does. It is a Mac daemon tasked with processing user content to detect contacts, events, named entities, etc. 'Suggestd' is necessary for the smooth operation of numerous features related to Spotlight, Mail, Messages, and other applications on the system. As such, finding the cause for the unexpected crash of the daemon may take a while. Do not despair, though, as there are several suggestions that you might try.

Use Safe Mode

Start the Mac in Safe Mode. Doing so will force the system to scan for eventual hard disc errors and fix them. Furthermore, Safe Mode boots the Mac with only the minimum required applications so it is a good test to see if the error will appear again. There are two methods for starting Safe Mode depending on your Mac model.

Intel-Based Macs:

  1. Choose the Apple menu.
  2. Select 'Shut Down.'
  3. After the Mac shuts down, wait for additional 10 seconds.
  4. Start the system and immediately press and hold the SHift key on your keyboard.
  5. When the login window appears, release the Shift key.

Macs with Apple Chips:

  1. Go to the Apple menu and select 'Shut Down.'
  2. Wait for 10 seconds after the system has already powered down.
  3. Press the power button and hold it until the startup options window appears.
  4. Choose a startup disk.
  5. While holding the Shift key on your keyboard, click 'Continue in Safe Mode.'

Rebuild the Spotlight Index

If the 'Suggestd quit unexpectedly' error appears even in Safe Mode, the next step is to try and rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac. There are a couple of methods for achieving this task.

  1. Go to the Apple menu.
  2. Open 'System Preferences'
  3. Click 'Spotlight.'
  4. Select the 'Privacy' tab.
  5. Now, drag the folder or disk you wish to recreate an index for to the list of locations that Spotlight cannot search. Alternatively, click the 'plus' button and select the folder and disk.
  6. Select the folder or disk that was just added and remove them by clicking the 'minus' button.
  7. Quit 'System Preferences.'
  8. Spotlight should reindex the contents of the disk or folder. Keep in mind that the process may take a while.

Manually Rebuilding Spotlight via Terminal

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Type and run the following commands in order:

sudo mdutil -E /

sudo mdutil -i on /

  1. Wait for the reindexing process to finish.
