Issue Sound Not Working on Mac

Sound Not Working on Mac

Dealing with sound issues is more often than not a rather annoying process as identifying the underlying cause may prove to be quite difficult. To quickly explore some potential solutions that have been reported to have a high success rate, scroll through the suggestions outlined below.

The first step may seem rather obvious but it is indeed quite a common occurrence - check if the sound on your Mac hasn't been muted. Simply tap the F12 (volume up) key on your keyboard. To better control the increments by which the sound is increased/decreased, you can use the Option+Shift+F12/F11 combination of buttons on your keyboard.

To check if an app such as a screen recorder that may have installed its own audio output drivers isn't interfering with the sound go to 'System Preferences' and open 'Sound.' Select the 'Output' tab. Look for an output option that has been selected and that shows an app. If that is indeed the case, uninstall the app and check if the sound issue has disappeared as well.

Another potential solution is to restart the Mac's sound controller. First, go to your Applications folder, open 'Utilities,' and start Activity Monitor by double-clicking it. Locate the search bar and type coreaudiod to easily find the Core Audio controller. Now, click on 'coreaudiod' and press the 'X' icon in the toolbar to shut it down. 'Coreaudiod' should then restart hopefully fixing your sound problem.
