Snip & Sketch not Working on Windows 10

Snip & Sketch is a convenient tool that allows users to take and then edit screenshots easily. Being developed by Microsoft, the tool enjoys great integration with the Windows OS. However, like all software products, Snip & Sketch also could run into problems such as corrupted files, unintentional bugs, or other issues that can cause the application to stop working. Due to the varied nature causes for the problem, users may need to try several solutions until they find the right one.  

Restart Snip & Sketch

This is the easiest way to restore access to the application if it has become frozen or crashed suddenly. 

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc on your keyboard and click on 'Task Manager' from the displayed options.
  2. Look under the 'Processes' tab and locate Snip & Sketch.
  3. Right-click the process and choose 'End task.'
  4. Start the app again.

Reset Snip & Sketch

Windows allows you to reset malfunctioning applications. However, keep in mind that doing so may fix the issue but you will lose all current settings and the cached data associated with the application.

  1. Press the Windows key + I on your keyboard. This will open the 'Settings' window.
  2. Go to 'Apps.'
  3. Now, locate Snip & Sketch under 'Apps & Features.'
  4. Click on it and choose 'Advanced options.'
  5. Click on the 'Reset' button.

Disable Focus Assist

If you have Focus Assist enabled, it could be causing the problem with Snip & Sketch. Try disabling it and see if it will help. To do so, click on the Action Center icon, button-right corner of your screen. Go to 'Focus Assist' and set it to 'Off.'

Run an SFC Scan

Conducting an SFC (System File Checker) scan can help if certain system files have become corrupted or are somehow missing. 

  1. Type cmd in the search field on the Taskbar. Right-click the top result and choose 'Run as administrator.' Alternatively, you can choose the same option from the list available on the right.
  2. Type sfc /scannow in the elevated Command Prompt window and press Enter on your keyboard.
  3. Wait for the scan to complete. 

Register Snip & Sketch Again

Registering malfunctioning applications with the Microsoft Store again could help in fixing the issues. 

  1. Press the Windows key + X on your keyboard. Select Windows Powershell (Admin) from the available options.
  2. Copy and paste the following command:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

  1. Press Enter to execute it.
  2. Restart the PC so that the changes can take effect and try launching the Snip & Sketch application.
