Issue MacBook Not Charging

MacBook Not Charging

There are many reasons that could cause your Mac to stop charging. These include broken or faulty connections, various hardware issues, the battery reaching critical condition, the whole system being overheated and more. To try some quick fixes that could help you determine what the underlying issue is, and attempt to fix it, follow the guidelines below.

Look for Physical Problems

It is always a good idea to start from the basics. Check the condition of the power cable and look for any breaks along its length. Next, verify that the ports of the system are in working condition. Remove any foreign objects, debris, or dust that might have obstructed them. Finally, inspect the wall socket. Try using a different socket, if available.

Check the Battery Health

If the battery refuses to charge even when you are using a cable, then you should confirm its health. To view the state of the battery, press and hold the Option (Alt) key on your keyboard and click the battery icon in the Menu Bar. This should open the advanced options menu. The battery will be in one of the four possible states:

  • Normal - Everything is working as intended.
  • Replace Soon - The battery is still working fine but it holds the charge for lesser periods than before.
  • Replace Now - The battery is experiencing issues holding its charge.
  • Service Battery - The battery must be replaced immediately to prevent potential damage to the whole system.

Reset the SMC

One of the responsibilities of the System Management Controller (SMC) is managing the battery management and its status indicator lights. By performing an SMC reset, you might be able to resolve the issue preventing the Mac from charging. The exact steps of the process depend on whether your computer has a removable or a non-removable battery.

SMC reset on Macs with non-removable battery:

  1. Shut down the MacBook.
  2. Press Shift+Control+Option and the Power button simultaneously. Hold all of them for at least 10 seconds.
  3. Release all keys.
  4. Start your Mac as normal.

SMC reset on Macs with a removable battery:

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Press and hold the power button for at least five seconds.
  4. Put the battery back in.
  5. Boot the system normally.
