iphlpsvc.exe High Memory Usage

The IP Helper Service (iphlpsvc.exe) is part of the Windows 10 OS and comes preinstalled on every Windows 10 system. This particular service is responsible for network tunnel connectivity through  HTTP, Port proxy, ISATAP, etc., and configuration management, such as configuring backups, troubleshooting issues, tracking certain activities and more. 

As such, it is not among the most widely used services. It is mostly required when users need to rely on connectivity services to the Windows OS like the Homegroup or IPv6. However, on some systems, iphlpsvc.exe may malfunction, leading to high memory and CPU usage. If you do not require this particular service in your everyday activities, you can resolve the issue by disabling it.

Disable the IP Helper Service via the Services Console

  1. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Here, type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Locate the IP Helper service.
  4. Double-click it to open its properties window.
  5. Select the 'General' tab, locate the Startup type options, and set it to 'Disabled' via the dropdown menu.
  6. Now, go to the 'Service status' section and press 'Stop' to disable the service.
  7. Finally, click 'Apply' and then 'OK' to save the changes.

Disable the IP Helper Service via the System Configuration Utility

  1. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type msconfig and press Enter.
  3. Select the 'Services' tab and locate 'IP Helper.'
  4. To disable the service, uncheck the corresponding box.
  5. Now, click 'Apply' and then 'OK.'
  6. For the changes to take effect, it is recommended to restart the system.
