How to Uninstall VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is a powerful open-source application that supports a multitude of different media formats. It can also play media from various sources including DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, or through streaming protocols. There are several great choices for media players so uses can pick the one that best suits their personal needs. If that is not VLC Media Player, then you will need to remove the application from your computer.

On macOS, users will first have to quit VLC. You can do so by going to the Menu bar, selecting 'VLC,' and clicking on 'Quit VLC.' Now it is time to remove the application itself. Open Finder and go to your Applications folder. Locate VLC's file and drag it to the Trash. Empty the Trash to complete the uninstallation. Unfortunately, some applications will leave behind certain service or support files that will have to be removed manually.

Go back to Finder but this time press Command+Shift+G simultaneously on your keyboard to open the 'Go to Folder' window. Type ~/Library in it and click on 'Go.' Once inside the Library folder, delete the following files associated with VLC Media Player:

~Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc

~Library/Saved Application State/org.videolan.vlc.savedState

~Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc

~Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc.plist

Do not forget to empty the Trash once more.

Windows users who wish to remove VLC from their computers can do so through the Control Panel. Start by typing control panel in the Search box on the Taskbar and opening the top result. Now, either click on 'Uninstall a program' or go through 'Programs' followed by 'Programs and Features.' In the list of installed programs, locate the entry for VLC, right-click it, and choose 'Uninstall.' Follow the on-screen instructions until the uninstallation process has been completed.
