How to Uninstall uTorrent

Although uTorrent is a staggeringly popular program for downloading countless media files at no charge, it also is adware and a known bundler of third-party Potentially Unwanted Programs like toolbars. Experts also point out numerous torrents display connections to file-locker Trojans, spyware and other threats. Users who would like to break free from all these security concerns should remove uTorrent as thoroughly as possible.

Generally, users should avoid manual uninstall strategies. Besides being tedious and technical, they run the risk of damaging components like the Registry, which Windows requires. Always follow the standard, easy-to-use uninstall techniques before resorting to more extreme measures. Users also should check that the program isn't running before they try uninstalling it. The Task Manager (or Activity Monitor for macOS users) can verify that no uTorrent processes are open.

Users might begin by trusting in the uninstaller that uTorrent bundles with its installation. Navigate to uTorrent's folder (usually, in 'Program Files' or 'Program Files (x86)') and look for the 'uninstall.exe' or 'unins000.exe' file. Run it and remove uTorrent.

Otherwise, Windows users have two main methods of deleting uTorrent software. Type 'Add or remove programs' in the taskbar's search field, then click the result. Scroll down the 'applications & features' list until you see uTorrent, left-click it and choose the Uninstall option.

An alternate way involves opening the Control Panel. Go to the Programs section and click the 'Remove a program' link underneath it. As with the previous example, users can scroll through the list and Uninstall the selected entry. However, they should right-click the uTorrent icon instead of left-clicking it.

Also, note the filtering options in both cases. The 'applications & features' list includes a search field and name, size, install date and drive filters. The Control Panel's 'Programs' list displays much of this information in fields to the right of the program's name, and users can sort them in ascending or descending order.

Finally, users also may right-click the uTorrent shortcut from the Start menu's and choose to Uninstall from there.

Due to the macOS's top-down UI approach, Apple fans have a shorter path to their uninstalling uTorrent. Open Finder and go to the Applications section. Find uTorrent (using the search feature, if necessary), and left-click it. Drag it to the Trash, and clean the Trash if you're sure about getting rid of the program.

In either macOS or Windows, users should consider some extra cleanup that removes any left-behind files or other components. For macOS, experts recommend that users check the following directories for uTorrent files:

/Library/Application Support/
/Library/Caches/
/Library/Preferences/

Windows users should check their Application Data directory. Navigate to C:/Users, and then to the folder with the Windows user account's name. Then, go to AppData, and then Local. Once there, search for directories or files with the 'uTorrent' string.

As a final note, advanced users might search the Registry for uTorrent entries and delete them. Because a wrong Registry edit can damage Windows and other programs, experts don't recommend it for casual users. Ideally, users will back up their Registries with the export feature before continuing with any potentially-risky cleaning steps.
