How to Uninstall f.lux

With a broadly-positive reception among casual PC users and tech journalists, f-lux (or f.lux) is a lightweight means of adjusting the monitor's 'color temperature' for reducing eye strain. However, it can have undesired side effects on gaming or art design experiences and, ultimately, has no independent, scientific confirmation of its efficacy. There also are reports of its memory usage. Users should follow the recommended uninstall steps for f-lux if they decide that the auto-color-adjusting program is more trouble than it's worth.

As a first step, naturally, quit out of f-lux. Windows users should look for the f-lux icon on their taskbar, right-click it, and select Quit. In a macOS environment, go to f-lux's Settings panel (near the system clock) and Quit. If you're experiencing issues with quitting out of f-lux, you also may directly close its memory process. In Windows, open the Task Manager (with the Ctrl+Shift+Escape keyboard shortcut, for example). In macOS, open the Activity Monitor by going to Finder, Applications, Utilities, and then the Activity Monitor shortcut. In either case, find the f-lux process ('flux.exe,' usually) and close it.

Windows users may uninstall f-lux from its Start shortcut, the Control Panel, or Settings. For the first method, click Start, scroll to the f-lux shortcut on the right, right-click it, and Uninstall. Alternately, open the Control Panel, select Programs, and 'Uninstall a program' (in the latest Windows version). Scroll through the list until you find f-lux, right-click it, and Uninstall. Finally, you also may go through Windows Settings and then Apps. Scroll down until you find f-lux and Uninstall by left-clicking and selecting the option.

In a macOS environment, users have fewer – but even more streamlined – options. Besides manual uninstall routines (which experts only recommend as a last resort in troubleshooting scenarios), there also is the standardized Finder-based uninstall routine. Open Finder, and navigate to Applications. Like with most other programs, scroll to find f-lux, and click-drag it to the Trash – or right-click it and select the Trash option. Empty the Trash to make this action permanent – or wait for the Trash content's duration expiration at thirty days.

Note that if f-lux was closed through the Activity Monitor or other non-standard means, macOS users also may need to remove related profile data. Go to the Color menu, inside of Displays, which is inside of System Preferences. Delete any f-lux profiles there.

Additionally, macOS users should disable the automatic brightness setting and reboot before turning it back on, to clear any unwanted settings changes.

As a rule, always restart the computer after making significant system changes like removing display-altering software. Not all software components are gone until after the operating system loads itself again.
