How To Turn Off Notifications on Mac

Generally speaking, notifications can be an incredibly convenient way of making sure that you will not forget an important task or an appointment. They also can be the fastest way to learn about new updates that have been released. The problem, however, is that every application and website wants to have its own notification enabled turning notification into another source of frustration and annoyance. Not to mention the sifting through the countest alerts to find the ones that matter to you could take up a significant time investment. To put the situation under control, you may want to turn off some of the notifications on your Mac system.

Use 'Do not Disturb' to disable notifications temporarily

  1. Click on the three horizontal lines on the right-hand side of the menu bar. This should display the Notification Center.
  2. Select 'Notifications.
  3. Scroll up a bit until you have reached the 'Night Shift' and 'Do Not Disturb' toggles.
  4. Set the 'Do Not Disturb' switch to 'On.' Notifications will now be blocked for as long as Do Not Disturb is active.

Turn off notifications for specific applications

  1. Go to 'System Preferences' and then 'Notifications.'
  2. From the list of applications, you can go to each one and review its settings.
  3. To disable all notifications coming from a specific app, select 'None' for alert type.
  4. To finetune the type of notifications that will be let through, choose 'Banners' or 'Alerts' and pick the options that best suit your preferences.

Turn off notifications for websites

One aspect that users find to be among the most annoying is that individual websites are allowed to generate notifications. While it is easy to simply reject their requests, the websites are relentless and will ask for permissions every single time you visit them. At some point, it is bound to happen as you might just misclick and allow the website's request. Users will then have to go to their browser's settings and find the specific section for notifications and permissions. Then navigate to each site and disable its services.
