How to Troubleshoot USB Ports on Mac

We are all using multiple USB-connected devices almost every day, as part of our work or when we are relaxing at home. Sometimes, however, issues may arise and the USB device might not be recognized and thus become unusable. To troubleshoot potential fixes for problems with your USB Ports on a Mac computer, explore the options outlined below.

First, try to isolate the problem. Inspect the device that is experiencing the problem while also making sure that the USB cable is in an appropriate working condition without any breaks alongside its length. Then, if possible, take two different USB devices and try plugin them in several ports. If the devices are not working on a particular port, then the problem is located there and it will most likely be resolved by physically changing the faulty port. If the devices are not recognized across all of the available ports, however, then the problem could be stemming from the Mac system itself. In that case, try the instructions below for possible fixes.

Reset the SMC

By resetting the SMS (System Management Controller) of your Mac, users can oftentimes resolve a variety of hardware-related issues. To start the process you will have to first shut down your Mac computer. Connect the power adapter. Now, press Shift+Control+Option+the Power button simultaneously. Release the buttons and wait for the system to boot normally. The SMC should have been reset so try to connect the USB device once more.

Reset PRAM/NVRAM

If the problem persists, try to reset the PRAM (Parameter RAM) and NVRAM (Non-Volatile RAM) of the system. The process is similar to the previous steps. Shut down your Mac. Now, start it while pressing and holding Command+Option (ALT)+P+R on your keyboard. Release the keys only after hearing a sound signal and seeing the screen flash. Wait for the Mac to start normally and try to check if the USB port issue has been resolved.
