How to Fix 'NVIDIA Control Panel not Opening'

People who work with resource-intensive graphic applications or video games and wish to adjust the performance of a particular game, need to have greater control over the way their GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) operates. Those that have an NVIDIA GPU can take advantage of the NVIDIA Control Panel that offers easy access to a multitude of important video settings. What to do if the NVIDIA Control Panel refuses to open?

Restart the Process

The most simple solution is to restart the associated process. You can do so by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc on your keyboard to open Task Manager. Locate the process named 'NVIDIA Control Panel Application,' right-click it, and choose 'End Task.' Now, relaunch it from the Start Menu and see if everything works as expected.

While Task Manager is still opened, check the CPU usage of a process named 'nvdisplay.container.exe.' If the resources it takes up are abnormally high, it may be the reason behind the malfunctioning NVIDIA Control Panel. Right-click the process and close it via 'End Task.'

Restart the NVIDIA Display Driver Service

  1. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Here, type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. In the Services window, locate 'NVIDIA Display Container LS.'
  4. Double-click it to open its 'Properties' box.
  5. Make sure that the service is 'Started.' Then, Stop it, wait a couple of seconds, and start it back again.
  6. Check the 'Startup type' and set it to 'Automatic' if it isn't already on it.

Update Your NVIDIA Graphic Driver

Check if a new driver version for your specific NVIDIA GPU model has been released. New drivers often contain various bug fixes and it might help resolve your current problems. You can check if a new version has been released either via the NVIDIA app or through the official website.
