Issue How to Fix Common Windows Problems

How to Fix Common Windows Problems

Windows 10 is generally considered to be superior to its predecessor. However, like any operating system, it too can run into various problems. In the vast majority of cases, the issues have an easy solution, and users will not need to seek any professional help.

Slow Boot Speed

If you notice that your PC has started to boot up slower than usual, there are several different options you can try to speed it up back again. First, make sure that your Windows is up-to-date and all available updates have been installed. Then, use the built-in Windows security measures or install a third-party security solution to check for potential malware that might be lurking on your system.

Another factor that could explain the slow boot speed of your system is a bloated number of programs set to start automatically on every system boot. Consider removing most of the ones you do not need immediately after the PC is turned on.

Files are Opened with Wrong Applications

All users have their individual preferences when it comes to which programs are allowed to handle specific file types. If you notice that a particular file is being handled by the wrong app, you can modify it according to your needs easily. Simply, press the Windows + I keys on your keyboard to open the 'Settings' window. Then, select 'App' followed by 'Default Apps' from the options in the left-side pane. Scroll through the list of apps that have been set as default and change the ones that you do not wish to use anymore.

Stop a Background Process from Eating Bandwith

If you are connecting to the Internet via a hotspot with a cellular connection, it may be wise to stop any background programs and processes that might be taking up precious bandwidth and wasting data.

  1. Press the Windows + I keys on your keyboard to open the 'Settings' window.
  2. Go to 'Network & Internet.'
  3. Pick 'Wi-Fi' followed by 'Advanced Options.'
  4. Find the toggle for 'Set as metered connection' and set it to 'ON.'

Can’t Start DVD Movies

Windows 10 doesn't have a native DVD player anymore. In this case, you will have to download a third-party one. You can go for a paid product or download a freeware one that will largely produce the same results.

Stop the Distracting Notifications

The Action Center offered by Windows 10 can be a convenient feature but it could easily get overwhelmed with distracting and not particularly relevant messages. To put the place in order, follow the instructions:

  1. Press the Windows + I keys on your keyboard. This should open the 'Settings' window.
  2. Go to 'System.'
  3. Choose 'Notifications & Actions.'
  4. Check the various options and toggles and adjust the behavior of the Action Center according to your preferences.

Printer Issues

Printer problems are one of the most commonly encountered by  Windows users. However, in nearly all cases, the solution is to install the latest drivers for your printer model.

  1. Type control panel in the search field on the taskbar and open the top result.
  2. Expand the 'Device and Printers' section by clicking on the node icon in front of it.
  3. Select your printer, right-click it, and choose to remove it.
  4. Open the official website of your printer's manufacturer, find the latest available drivers, and follow their instructions to install them.
