How to Enable or Disable the Touchpad in Windows

A common annoyance shared by many laptop users is brushing their palms or fingers across the surface of the touchpad accidentally. This could mess up your writing, cause frustrating distractions and wasted time. If you prefer using a mouse or are not that fond of your laptop's Touchpad in general, you can try to disable it and solve the problem once and for all. There are multiple ways to achieve this and we have listed the easiest and most convenient ones.

Use the Control Panel

  1. Type control panel in the search field on the taskbar and open the top result.
  2. Open 'Mouse Properties' or 'Mouse.'
  3. Open the 'Touchpad' tab and simply turn it off via the corresponding option.
  4. Click 'Save' and then 'OK' to save the changes.

If you do not see the Touchpad tab, you may need to download the specific touchpad drivers for your device from the official website.

Use the Device Manager

  1. Type device manager in the search field on the taskbar and open the top result.
  2. Locate the 'Mice and other pointing devices' section and expand it by clicking on the node icon in from of it.
  3. Right-click the touchpad and choose 'Uninstall Device' or 'Uninstall Driver.'

Use the Windows Settings

  1. Press the Windows key + I on your keyboard to open Windows Settings.
  2. Open 'Bluetooth & devices' on Windows 11 or 'Devices' on Windows 10.
  3. Go to the 'Touchpad' menu.
  4. Uncheck the 'Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected' option.
