How To Disable Startup Programs On Windows

While it may be convenient to have all of the programs you usually need be ready at the very moment the system boots, having too many startup programs can become problematic. Even on powerful PC systems, having to deal with numerous programs that have to be initiated on boot could lead to slowdowns and increased load time. If you are experiencing similar symptoms whenever you turn your PC on, then consider disabling some of the startup programs. To do so follow the guides described below.

Windows 10 Systems

Managing the startup programs on systems running the newer Windows 10 versions is extremely fast and easy. Simply, type startup apps in the search field on the taskbar and open the top result. You will be presented with a list of all apps that can be configured to start every time you log in to the system. Check the ones that are currently toggled on and consider disabling at least some of them to decrease the load exerted on your computer every time it is started.

Windows 7, Vista, and XP

To disable startup programs on systems running older Windows editions such as Windows 7, Vista, or XP, users can use the built-in MSConfig tool.

  1. Open the Start menu
  2. Type msconfig.exe and open the top result.

For Windows XP only: Open the Run dialog box from the Start menu and then type msconfig.exe in it. Click 'Ok.'

  1. Select the 'Startup' tab in the 'System Configuration' window.
  2. You will see a list of all programs that can be set to start automatically on boot. Uncheck the ones that you do not particularly need by clicking on the checkbox in front of them. Click 'OK' to confirm the changes.
  3. You may be presented with a dialog box stating that the system needs to be restarted for the change to take effect. Choose 'Restart' to do so immediately or click on 'Exit' to continue using the system without restarting it.
