Issue How to Clear the Mail Storage on Mac

How to Clear the Mail Storage on Mac

If you’ve got an older Mac and you’re running out of storage space, it’s worth looking at your applications to see which ones you can remove. You can get rid of a lot of applications that have been pre-installed on your Mac, as well as applications that you’ve downloaded.

To view applications on your Mac, you:

  • Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner,
  • Choose System Preferences, and then the app list.
  • From there, just select the application and hit the trash can icon.
  • Alternatively, press and hold the trash can icon until it disappears, and then slide it into the Trash can in System Preferences.

Moving an application is as easy as dragging it down the folder tree. Just as with how you move files on a computer, you can create folders to organize applications. First, make sure you have .app files open in Spotlight. You can do this with any open application, including your email programs, mail clients and more. Just type the application name and then hit ENTER. A folder will be created, and you can remove that one or multiple folders.

If you have multiple versions of the same application, you can drag them all to a new folder. Navigate to the folder you want them to go to, and click the trash can icon at the top of the folder tree. Once you have a folder, you can remove it through the menu at the top of the window. Alternatively, if you’ve downloaded the application from the App Store, you can right-click on it and select 'Delete App.' The application will be deleted and a confirmation dialog box will appear letting you confirm. Then you can remove it as well.

To remove an application from the Library folder, open an application you want to remove and then click the Apple menu at the top of the window. Choose 'Go to Library' and then select Library > Apps. Make sure you have .app files open in Spotlight to view the application. To remove an application, just click that application.

Prevent Emails from Filling Up the Mail Storage

There are two main ways to achieve this. First, you can set up rules in your email client to move emails out of the inbox and into folders automatically. Second, you can delete old emails that are no longer needed.

Clean Out the Trash to Free Up Space in the Mac Mail

Another way to keep your Mac Mail from taking up too much space is to clean out your trash. Even if you don’t delete the emails themselves, you can delete the emails from the trash folder to free up space.
