Computer Sound Volume Too Low on Windows

Some Windows users may be experiencing problems with their audio being way too low and wondering how to fix it. The exact solution depends on the specific cause of the problem. Therefore, they may need to try several options before finding the right one.

Try the Audio Troubleshooter

Both Windows 10 and 11 users can try to run the built-in Audio troubleshooter to see if it can fix the issue.

On Windows 10:

  1. Press the Windows key + I on your keyboard.
  2. Open 'Update & Security.'
  3. Select 'Troubleshoot.'
  4. Locate and click on the 'Additional troubleshooters' option.
  5. Select 'Playing audio' and click on the 'Run the troubleshooter' button.

On Windows 11:

  1. Open 'Settings' by pressing the Windows button + I on your keyboard.
  2. Open 'System.'
  3. Go to 'Troubleshoot.'
  4. Click on 'Other troubleshooters.'
  5. Locate 'Playing Audio troubleshooter' again and click the corresponding 'Run' button.

Check the Communications Settings

This is a built-in Windows Low Volume feature that is supposed to trigger when the user is starting or receiving voice calls. It can reduce the volume of the other audio sources or stop them completely.

  1. Right-click the volume icon on your taskbar and choose the 'Sounds' option.
  2. In the 'Sounds' window, go to the 'Communications' tab.
  3. If it isn't already active, enable the 'Do nothing' option.

Try the Loudness Equalization

  1. Right-click the volume icon on your taskbar and choose the 'Sounds' option.
  2. In the 'Sounds' window, go to the 'Communications' tab.
  3. This time, go to the 'Playback' tab.
  4. Select your playback device and click on the 'Properties' button.
  5. If you see an 'Enhancement' tab, select it.
  6. Now, select Loudness Equalization and then save the changes.
  7.  If this option is not activated, you will hear a comparatively lower volume. Again open the “Sound” settings. In the Playback tab, select the playback device and hit the Properties button. After that, go to the Enhancements tab. Select Loudness Equalization and save your changes.

Turn Up the Media Player Sound

Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar and open the 'Volume mixer' option. Here, check for the specific application that is being too quiet and adjust its corresponding volume slider. On Windows 11, users will need to first open 'System,' then 'Sound,' and finally 'Volume Mixer.'
