Cybersecurity researchers have recently detected a new type of Trojan that affects MacOS systems and infects them with additional malicious programs. This new malware threat has been identified as Trojan.MacOS.Tinyv, or Tinyv Trojan for Mac. From what is known so far, we can say that Tinyv Trojan can obfuscate its code to avoid detection by anti-malware programs. This malware probably spreads through spam e-mail campaigns, whereby it is embedded into attached documents typically designated as "Invoice," "Order," "Reimbursement," "Agreement," "Product," and so on. This method relies on social engineering techniques to trick users into opening an attachment that seems important and legit.

Trojan.iOS.TinyV is part of the iOS Trojan malware family known as “TinyV.” It was discovered in October 2015 when malware researchers investigated several cases of Chinese users reporting their Mac devices had been infected with an unknown malware threat. Back then, additional research showed this same piece of malware had been repackaged into some pirated iOS apps available for download through multiple channels. Nowadays, TinyV Trojan is still targeting iOS devices, yet the latest research shows it has now added adware features to its regular Trojan activities.

Currently, the main purpose of TinyV Trojan is to display ads on infected devices, promoting rogue or potentially malicious products or services on the Internet. The Trojan modifies the system settings in order to be able to display its scam notifications, which causes system slowdown and deteriorating performance as side effects. TinyV typically affects jailbroken devices, where it can even cause permanent damage. Distribution methods include “bundling” into freeware, shady websites that offer free downloads, or corrupted ads.

TinyV Trojans affects Mac computers, laptops, iPads, and iPhones. Along with generating ads, it also executes the characteristic actions of a Trojan, like obtaining access to the user’s iOS account, stealing passwords and files, activating the camera, and others. Infection with this Trojan can be cleaned with the help of a reputable anti-malware program for Mac.

After Tinyv Trojan has infected the Mac computer, it establishes a connection with a remote host controlled by the operators of the malware and starts sending data from the affected PC. The Trojan may download a sidebar on your browser or desktop, along with other hidden files and folders on various locations. Trojans are highly dangerous threats as they can install additional malware, like Ransomware, Rootkits, Adware, RATs, and many others. Therefore, Tinyv Trojan puts your sensitive data and your entire Mac computer at risk, so it should be immediately removed from your system.
