Gifter

Gifter is an adware component which PC security analysts classify as a Potentially Unwanted Program. There are many reasons why PC security researchers consider Gifter problematic including the following:

• Gifter may show a large amount of advertisements on affected browsers.
• Despite being advertised as a useful browser extension, Gifter may cause numerous issues by taking over the affected browser and inserting many advertisements into Web pages viewed by the affected PC user.
• Gifter may be linked to several performance problems on affected Web browsers.

Because of this, PC security researchers strongly recommend removing Gifter from an affected PC as soon as possible. Gifter is not considered threatening (like a virus or Trojan). However, the many issues that may be linked to Gifter and similar PUPs make it a better idea to remove these types of browser components as soon as possible to avoid further issues.

Removing Gifter is the Best Course of Action

Adware programs may be used to generate revenue at the expense of PC users. They may not provide any kind of useful or interesting service in return. Gifter also may be difficult or unnecessarily convoluted to remove. In most cases, Gifter and other PUPs may enter an affected PC automatically. To do this, Gifter is bundled together with other software. Gifter may cause performance problems and make it hard to use the affected Web browser due to its frequent advertisements and browser redirects. Gifter is promoted as a browser extension that allows PC users to gain access to special online deals and coupons. Unfortunately, Gifter fills your browser with advertisements and doesn't fulfill its promise. Instead of helping you shop online, Gifter may do some of the following things:

• The Web pages viewed by PC users may be inserted with banner and in-text advertisements displayed by Gifter.
• Gifter may cause the affected browser to display pop-up windows or new tabs containing content linked to Gifter.
• This PUP may redirect your browser to Web pages linked to Gifter automatically.
• Gifter may claim that it has access to a better price or deal when the computer user is shopping online, despite this not being true.

Uninstalling Gifter and Similar PUPs

Gifter can be removed manually without too many problems. The following steps are recommended when dealing manually with Gifter or other types of adware components:

1. Use the 'Uninstall a Program' option in the Control Panel. This is where PC users may find Gifter or other PUPs that use a similar approach. There will be instances that may demand closing the Web browser.
2. Once this step is completed, security researchers then recommend removing any software and components linked to Gifter from your program folders as well as your documents and other locations where Gifter may have stored data.
3. Registry entries associated with Gifter may remain on your PC. Because of this, it is important to use the Registry Editor to perform a search for Gifter. Any registry entries found that are linked to Gifter should be deleted immediately to prevent Gifter from appearing again or causing conflicts on the affected Web browser.
4. Gifter may have made changes to your Web browser settings. Because of this, it is necessary to run your browser and delete the Gifter extension or add-on. Then, look through your Web browser settings and restore any changes made by Gifter. For example, Gifter may have changed the affected Web browser's default search engine and homepage automatically.
5. After completing the steps above, it is recommended to run a full scan of the compromised computer with an anti-malware product. Although Gifter is not threatening, Gifter may be associated with a threatening program indirectly.
