The 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus steals the iconic line from The Lord of the Ring's Gandalf and uses it in a typical browser hijacker infection. Computer users affected by the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus have reported that the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus takes over their Web browser, preventing them from accessing a wide variety of popular websites. Some of the websites affected by the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus include Google, Facebook, Tumblr and YouTube. Whenever the computer user attempts to connect to one of these websites, the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus redirects the victim's Web browser to a page showing an image of Gandalf and the message 'You Shall Not Pass'.
How the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus Prevents You from Accessing Your Favorite Websites
Like many browser hijackers, the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus uses a simple modification to the infected computer's HOSTS file in order to change how the affected Web browser connects to specific websites. This file contains the DNS server information that specifies the DNS server used by your Web browser to convert URL names into IP addresses. The people responsible for the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus can then set up a rogue DNS server which simply redirects your Web browser to the Web page associated with the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus whenever you attempt to connect to a popular website. While this may seem like a harmless prank, it is important to note that the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus message could easily be substituted with something more malicious such as an attack website containing the Black Hole Exploit Kit or a fake search engine designed to infect your computer with adware.
Sources of the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus
Computer users have reported becoming affected by the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus after downloading a fake account, key or serial number generators for popular games such as Minecraft. It is also important to understand that the 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus will frequently be present in association with other dangerous malware. For example, dangerous backdoor Trojans and RATs (Remote Access Trojans) may be installed on the victim's computers. Because of this, a 'You Shall Not Pass' Virus infection should be treated as a severe problem requiring a thorough scan with a reliable anti-malware program that is fully up to date.
