By GoldSparrow in Browser Hijackers

Update-browser.org is a domain that is associated with a pop-up window that will try to convince you that your Web browser is outdated. Although most observed cases involving Update-browser.org prompt the victim to download a bogus update for Mozilla Firefox, Update-browser.org can detect the Web browser on your computer and then adapt its content appropriately. Versions of Update-browser.org have been observed offering bogus updates for Google Chrome and Internet Explorer as well. If computer users click on the bogus update offered in the Update-browser.org pop-up, a Potentially Unwanted Program is installed on the affected computer. PUPs associated with Update-browser.org are typically used to profit from advertising at the expense of computer users and may become the cause of various problems on compromised computers. Update-browser.org is associated with numerous PUPs that are currently active and being used to steal money from inexperienced computer users.

Why the Update-browser.org Pop-Up May Appear on Your Computer

If the Update-browser.org pop-up is appearing on your Web browser, this may mean one of the two following scenarios:

  1. The Update-browser.org pop-up may appear on a Web browser if the computer user is visiting corrupted websites so that they may display unsafe content. The Update-browser.org pop-up may also appear if the computer user is visiting websites that contain this type of content because they are poorly maintained or because they are purposefully used as part of PUP distribution networks.
  2. If the Update-browser.org pop-up is appearing frequently on your Web browser regardless of the websites you are visiting (for example, if the Update-browser.org pop-up appears when you visit websites that are known to be absolutely safe and have previously not shown these types of issues) then this indicates that a PUP infection is already present on your computer. PUPs that cause the appearance of the Update-browser.org pop-up may be used to try to convince inexperienced computer users to download additional PUPs onto their computer.
