TROJ_PIDIEF.SMXY is a Trojan that propagates via malicious emails linked to a new Pope Francis. The bogus emails corrupting targeted computers by TROJ_PIDIEF.SMXY use the new pope and controversies surrounding the Catholic Church to increase the curiosity of attacked PC users. To make victims believe the fake emails are genuine, they cite CNN as the supposed source. The so-called topic of the spam email is about Pope Francis; however, the unsolicited email message calls the new pope Benedict, which is, in reality, the name of his predecessor. The web-links inserted into the fraudulent emails take recipients to websites which have been hacked by Blackhole Exploit Kits (BHEK) that disperse numerous malware infections that involve TROJ_PIDIEF.SMXY to the infected computer system. TROJ_PIDIEF.SMXY exploits CVE-2009-0927, a dated vulnerability in Adobe Reader and Acrobat, for execution of its routines.
