Syscare-antivirus.org

By ESGI Advisor in Browser Hijackers

The Syscare-antivirus.org was taken down. This is definitely a positive development considering that Syscare-antivirus.org used to host a well known online scam which involved fake anti-virus software. Rogue security software such as System Care Antivirus, the fake anti-virus program that was hosted on Syscare-antivirus.org, are among the most common online scams that are aimed to rob money from gullible computer users since the early days of the Internet.

The Syscare-antivirus.org website promotes what is known to be a rogue anti-virus program. These are fake security programs that are designed with the only purpose of detecting false positives, so inexperienced computer users will be tricked into paying for an expensive 'upgrade' to a 'full version' of the fake anti-virus program To do this, these fake security programs will claim that the victim's computer is severely infected with malware, spamming the victim with numerous fake error messages, bogus virus reports and a supposed system scan that detects numerous problems on the victim's computer. Since the fake anti-virus program is conceived to imitate the external appearance of a real security program, inexperienced computer users may trust it and believe its claims. However, when it comes time to actually 'fix' these supposed problems, the fake anti-virus program will claim that an upgrade to a 'full version' must be done, which can be acquired through the Syscare-antivirus.org website.

The Main Danger Associated with Syscare-antivirus.org

The Syscare-antivirus.org website had two purposes: to distribute the 'free' version of this fake anti-virus program and to collect payment from unsuspecting computer users seeking the necessary 'upgrade' in order to remove the fake infections from their computer. Unfortunately, 'upgrading' this fake anti-virus solution is nothing more than a misuse of money. Most importantly, doing so allows criminals to gain access to the victim's credit card information, which can then be used to carry out identity theft scams and similar crimes. Because of this, ESG security researchers strongly advise computer users only to install security software that come from reputable, well known sources and to mistrust fake security programs that are installed without consent.

We got hit with this on 07/23/2013. It locked up the computer so bad that I couldn't open any browsers to check on it. Would up paying the 59.99/6mo. package. I finally got a hold of them and told them I had submitted a complaint with the FBI Cyber Crimes unit (which I did) and they agreed to refund me my money. I told the I would cancell the complaint when the money was back in my account (which I will not do). We'll see what happens next.
