Gapscult.com is a dubious website tasked with the delivery of unwanted, questionable and potentially risky content to its visitors. It must be noted that deceptive pages such as this one are often reencountered as a result of visiting a page that uses rogue advertising networks. Another common reason for seeing such websites are redirects caused by a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) that has managed to get inside the user's computer or device.
The main way that Gapscult.com operates is by displaying misleading pop-ups. The site may first pretend to do a CAPTCHA check by asking users to click on the 'I'm not a robot' checkbox. After following the instruction, a new pop-up will be generated immediately. This time it will claim that 'Windows Cleanup is recommended.' Users also will be provided with a convenient link to download a promoted application that will supposedly perform the cleanup.
It is crucial to remember never to download applications recommended by such untrustworthy sources. These applications are oftentimes nothing more than adware, browser hijackers or other PUPs. The dubious applications may even contain serious malware threats. In some cases, users are presented with legitimate software products. The goal of the fraudsters is to then earn illegitimate sale commissions for each purchase made through their website.
In addition, Gapscult.com may ask its visitors to allow its browser notification. While designed to be a useful method for receiving timely updates, website notifications have been abused by fraudsters to distribute misleading, intrusive and unwanted advertisements. These advertisements may promote suspicious websites or contain offers for more PUPs.
