FinderTab

FinderTab is another browser hijacker tab tasked with promoting a fake search engine. Applications of this type are equipped with various intrusive capabilities that allow them to establish their presence on the user's computer or device and then take control over the Web browser's settings. Normally, users would not be willing to download and install such an application by themselves. The unscrupulous people responsible for releasing these PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) are aware of this fact entirely and that is why they spread their applications via underhanded methods, such as bundling or fake installers/updaters.   

FinderTab, in particular, is designed to promote its own fake engine at findertab.xyz. It does so by taking control over the browser's homepage, new tab page, and default search engine settings. By forcing all three to open the promoted site, the sponsored page will be opened whenever the affected browser is launched, a new tab is opened, or a search is initiated via the URL tab. Fake engines are classified as such, due to their inability to produce any results on their own. Findertab.xyz is no different and it shows results by redirecting the search through the legitimate search.yahoo.com engine. 

Using fake search engines and keeping PUPs present on their devices could expose users to additional risks. The dubious application may be spying on their online activities, as well as gathering various device details. The gathered data could be packaged and then transmitted to a remote server. It is strongly recommended to do regular scans of your device or computer with a reputable security solution to keep it clean from such intrusive applications.
