The Film Links Now browser extension presents itself as a useful tool for movie-lovers to access movies and movie-related content online easily. Indeed, after being installed the application will provide links to sites such as IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and more. Unfortunately, this is not all that Film Links Now will do on the system. The application is equipped with browser hijacker functionalities and it will take over certain browser settings to promote a sponsored address.
Users will notice that their normal homepage, new tab page, and default search engine have all been substituted with an unfamiliar page - filmlinksnow.com. It belongs to a fake search engine that lacks the necessary programming and cannot generate search results on its own. Instead, it will take the user's search query and redirect it through another engine. Depending on factors, such as the specific IP address and geolocation, users may be shown results taken from the legitimate Bing search engine potentially dubious ones. This means that the displayed results cannot be trusted blindly, as they could contain sponsored links or promote unrelated websites. Furthermore, while Film Links Now is present on the system, it will prevent users from reverting the modified settings to their original states.
Another thing to take into consideration is that Film Links Now may be spying on the browsing activities carried on the system. The application could be tracking any opened website, conducted searches or clicked URLs.
