Threat Database Adware FileDisplay

FileDisplay

FileDisplay is yet another Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) leveraged against Mac users. The application combines the functionality of adware and a browser hijacker. With users being extremely unlikely to download it intentionally, FileDisplay relies on deceptive marketing strategies for its distribution. These methods, such as bundling, are designed to mask the fact that an additional application is being installed on the user's system specifically.

Once inside the Mac, FileDisplay will waste no time monetizing its presence. The PUP will start running an intrusive advertising campaign that will flood the device with unwanted ad materials. Users will notice a vastly increased number of pop-ups, banners, surveys, etc. Engaging with the advertisements is not recommended, as they could lead to questionable or unsafe places such as phishing or misleading pages.

At the same time, FileDisplay will proceed with its browser-hijacker process that will modify specific browser settings to promote a sponsored address. The browser's homepage, default search engine, and the new tab page will all be set to open FileDisplay's address.

While FileDisplay is present on the Mac it could also establish and run a tracking routine that will collect information. While most PUPs go after the user browsing habits, FileDisplay will attempt to harvest far more unsafe data - the application may try to access payment or banking info, as well as credit/debit card details if such data has been saved into the affected browser.
