Threat Database Adware ExtendedRotator

ExtendedRotator

ExtendedRotator is a dubious application that many Mac users may have allowed to be installed on their computers unknowingly. These intrusive applications are notorious for being spread through questionable means that mask their installation. One of the most widespread tactics is known as bundling. It sees the intruder app being added as a preselected choice in the installation settings of a far more desirable software product. If users do not check under the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' settings specifically, they won't notice the PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program).

Once ExtendedRotator has been deployed on the Mac, it will proceed to monetize its presence without wasting any time. Affected users will notice a significant increase in the unwanted and annoying advertisements they encounter while browsing the Web. The advertisements generated by the adware functionality of the PUP should not be trusted. They may display misleading and clickbait messages, lure users into engaging with them and then redirect to dubious, shady, or outright compromised third-party websites.

The intrusive actions of ExtendedRotator do not stop there. The application also will take over the user's Web browsers in a typical browser hijacker fashion. It may impact the homepage, new page tab, and the default search engine settings. The goal is to set all three to start opening a sponsored web address, typically a fake search engine.

As long as such PUPs are present on the MAc, users may be at risk of having their browsing activities tracked. The intrusive applications may have data-harvesting capabilities that will siphon information from the device and transmit it to a remote server. Depending on the specific goals of the PUP's operators, they may exploit the acquired data in a variety of different ways, including selling it to interested third parties and cybercriminals.
