CharacterGeneration is another dubious application targeting Mac users. Most PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) rely on deceptive tactics to hide the fact that they are going to be installed on the users' devices. That is why it is crucial to be extra careful when dealing with software bundles or installing items obtained from unknown or unfamiliar sources.
CharacterGeneration, in particular, has been confirmed to be an application belonging to the AdLoad adware family. It is equipped with adware capabilities, and its primary focus appears to be the delivery of intrusive and annoying advertisements to the user's Mac. The delivered advertisements could appear under numerous, different forms - pop-ups, redirects, banners, notifications, etc. When dealing with these advertisements, users should exercise caution, as interacting with them could cause forced redirects. The advertisements themselves could be used as a way to promote online schemes, sites spreading additional PUPs, shady online gaming/betting platforms and more.
In addition, many PUPs also have the ability to collect the user's data. The invasive applications may monitor the browsing activities on the device, collect device details, and even attempt to extract sensitive information from browsers' autofill data. Typically, this feature is used by users to automatically populate account credentials, banking details, payment data, etc.
