Bozq Ransomware

The Bozq Ransomware is a threatening tool created from the prolific STOP/Djvu malware family. Cybercriminals continue to rely on this particular malware strain as a way to rapidly create and unleash powerful data-encrypting threats. Indeed, the files on devices infected by the Bozq Ransomware will be subjected to data encryption that will render them completely unstable. The goal of the threat actors is to then extort the impacted users or organizations for money.

All files encrypted by the threat will have their names changed to now include '.bozq' as a new file extension. A text file named '_readme.txt' will be created on the systems, as a way to deliver a ransom note with instructions from the attackers. The message states that the hackers demand to be paid a ransom of $980. If victims initiate contact within the first 72 hours, they would supposedly have to pay only half of that amount. In addition, the cybercriminals will apparently agree to decrypt one chosen file for free. The file that victims send, however, must not carry any important information.

Victims of attacks involving STOP/Djvu strains should be warned that additional malware payloads also may have been dropped on the devices. STOP/Djvu operators have been observed deploying info-stealers, such as Vidar Stealer and RedLine Stealer, alongside the ransomware threats.
