Threat Database Adware AreaProduct

AreaProduct

AreaProduct is an adware application that also is trying to siphon information from the systems it is installed on. Adware applications are extremely unlikely to be installed by users intentionally. Instead, they rely on several deceptive marketing techniques for their distribution, such as bundling or hiding inside fake installers/updaters for other more popular software products. This aspect justifies the classification of AreaProduct as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP).

No matter how it happened, if AreaProduct manages to sneak itself onto the user's Mac system, it will begin to monetize its presence as soon as possible. The PUP will start to generate various intrusive advertising materials - pop-ups, banners, surveys, coupons, in-text links, etc. The advertisements might show different clickbait messages designed to attract the attention of users and lure them into clicking on the advertisement. Doing so should be considered a potential security risk - the unwanted advertisements could lead to questionable or outright unsafe third-party websites via forced redirects. Users may find themselves landing on phishing pages designed to harvest all entered information. Technical support tactics or fake giveaways also are popular destinations. Users also may be brought to domains dedicated to promoting and spreading additional PUPs.

While so far AreaProduct could be considered more than a nuisance than anything else, there is another far more sinister aspect to the application. AreaProduct will try to collect data whenever the user inputs passwords, credit/debit card details, phone numbers, etc. into websites. All gathered data could then be misused by the PUP operators themselves or potentially offered for sale to interested third parties.
