Threat Database Mac Malware AllocateClassics

AllocateClassics

AllocateClassics is a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) that is being spread via dubious and questionable methods. The application has been observed being promoted by untrustworthy websites that try to convince their visitors into downloading an update for a supposedly outdated software product. For example, AllocateClassics may be injected into fake Adobe Flash Player installers. It should be pointed out that the intrusive application is specifically targeted at Mac devices.

Once executed on the computer, AllocateClassics will start running an annoying ad campaign. As such, it also is classified as adware. The generated advertisements may appear in various forms - pop-ups, banners, in-text links, and could be promoting suspicious or outright unsafe sites, services or software products. It is not uncommon for PUP to show users advertisements for fake giveaways, phishing portals, shady adult-oriented platforms, etc.

While active on the device, PUPs also may silently perform other unwanted actions in the background. After all, these applications are notorious for carrying data-tracking functionalities. Users could have their browsing activities monitored, packaged, and transmitted to a server controlled by the PUP's operators. The captured information also may include a wide range of device details or even banking details, payment data, and credit/debit card numbers extracted from browsers' autofill data.
