Adware.MacOS.WebTools.A is a dangerous malware attacking Mac computers. Distribution methods can vary, though most of the time, its developers would use software installers, malicious documents, other executables (patches, plugins, add-ons), whereby the malware’s code is hidden and executed in the background. Often, Adware.MacOS.WebTools.A spreads through the installation files of other software programs - a method which is known as “bundling”. Victims usually get infected with this threat without even noticing after downloading and installing apps or tools from fake landing pages, untrusty websites, file-sharing platforms, online forums, social media, or other similar unreliable sources.
Adware threats typically generate unsolicited advertising content, but some of them can also serve as carriers for other, much more severe, malware threats with a broad scope of potential damage. Malware researchers have recently found out that Adware.MacOS.WebTools.A is one of the core components of the Bundlelore PUP, which in turn, can install a Trojan module and a browser hijacker on the user’s device. Being part of the Bundlelore virus, this adware can bypass existing security measures and create a backdoor that allows the installation of additional threats. As a result, Adware.MacOS.WebTools.A can “hijack” essential programs and settings and provide the attackers with control over them.
It is also known that Adware.MacOS.WebTools.A installs as a persistent threat by modifying specific configuration files and system settings. For example, through these changes, the adware ensures its launch on each boot of the macOS device or blocks the user from accessing the recovery menus where the initial settings can be restored. Due to the wide variety of different functions that Adware.MacOS.WebTools.A can execute, experts, recommend its removal through a reliable anti-malware solution as soon as possible.
