Lizard Squad Hacker Group Suspected to Have Hijacked Lenovo.com Domain

lenovo site hijacked superfish issuesHackers groups are always on the lookout for their next victim just like an avid hunter seeking the next meal to place on his dinner table. The hacker group known as Lizard Squad has been recently suspected of being responsible for hijacking the Lenovo.com domain.

As you may already know, Lenovo.com is the home page belonging to the world's largest personal computer vendor, Lenovo. In recent news, Lenovo has been under fire for pre-bundling their laptop computers delivered shipped September 2014 to December 2014 with the Superfish software. As you may know, Superfish was discovered to be a malicious add-on and root cause for rogue security certificates that could relinquish personal data transmitted over the internet.

Computer security experts believe in the recent hijacking of Lenovo.com that the Superfish incident was a trigger to initiate an attack on the website. In past events, hacker groups who strongly oppose the actions of a company or entity will usually retaliate by attacking their web server in some form, which is believed to be the case with Lenovo.com being defaced displaying strange content.

The Lenovo.com attack took down the site and replaced its home page with imagery of a young girl in front of a computer webcam with the song "Breaking Free" from High School Musical playing in the background. Such a defacement of a large website belonging to a massive company is nothing new, including the type of content chosen to be displayed.

The likelihood of Lizard Squad hackers being the culprit in the hijack of Lenovo.com is very high considering a tweet from a profile claiming the attack is controlled by a Lizard Squad member. The account was later found to have posted a message reading, "We're breaking free! Soarin', flyin', there's not a star in heaven that we can't reach!"

Not only did the hackers deface the Lenovo.com website, but it appears that they have intercepted company emails and published some of them to several Lenovo employees. Through the manipulation of the MX mail server records, Lizard Squad may have taken control of company communication infrastructures to intercept emails. Lizard Squad has also made the claim of them possessing more emails from Lenovo.

The mistake of Lenovo bundling numerous new laptop computers with Superfish has been a major undertaking for the company. Now, with the looming alleged threat of Lizard Squad hackers, the company has acknowledged it falling victim to a cyber-attack that redirected traffic to a server that it did not control. Experts believe that the DNS information pointed to a site behind the CloudFlare network, a widely popular service for providing CDN (Content Deliver Network) services for websites.
