When surfing the Internet, you are constantly downloading files, whether in the form of emails or web pages. These are typically scanned by your anti-virus program and email provider to discover any malicious programs hiding amongst them. However, it is also likely you are downloading other items, such as music or video files, updates to your software and even entire programs like game demos and freeware applications. These bigger files aren’t automatically scanned by your anti-virus software like web pages and emails are, and thus may pose a threat to your computer.

Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself against the risks inherent in installing software on your computer.

  • Do not install unknown software. Before downloading any program, make certain you know what it does and how it will affect your computer.
  • Use spyware detection software. Very important, spyware detection software is designed to find and remove hidden of intrusive software on your computer, and should be run as often as possible.
  • Be careful of file-sharing programs. These applications open your computer up to numerous other people by providing access to particular directories. Before installing any type of file-sharing program, make certain you know how to properly configure the software to decrease the chance of security risks.
  • Use only the most recent version of your browser. Each browser release updates standards and fixes any security holes present in earlier versions. Make certain to also check the publisher’s website to see if security or other patches are available.
  • Check system requirements. Be careful to check all the software’s system requirements before installing. Make certain that your computer meets these requirements, and most importantly, make sure you have ample hard drive space.
  • Use System Restore. If you are using Microsoft Windows XP, Windows ME, or Windows 2000, make sure you use the operating system’s System Restore facility in order to create a checkpoint before installing any new software. Should the program you are downloading cause severe problems for your computer, you may instantly return to the checkpoint you created before the issues began.
  • Update security software. Always remember to update your security software, such as anti-spyware and anti-virus programs, in order to keep your computer running at optimum performance and to ensure your system remains safe from any threats.
