Smash Ransomware

By GoldSparrow in Ransomware

The Smash Ransomware is an annoying application that PC security analysts have detected. The Smash Ransomware uses images and content related to the Super Mario Bros games, such as an image of the iconic Super Mushroom holding a knife menacingly. Although the Smash Ransomware acts like a ransomware and claims to be a ransomware threat, it would be incorrect to refer to the Smash Ransomware as ransomware, since it does not have this functionality. Rather, the Smash Ransomware does not encrypt or lock files, and could still be incomplete or just in development. The Smash Ransomware would be referred to as a screen locker accurately since it annoys its victims by locking their screens and preventing computer users from accessing their files or their computer's Desktop.

How Does the Smash Ransomware Attack Your Computer?

After the Smash Ransomware is delivered to the victim's computer, the Smash Ransomware will display six pop-up windows, one after the other immediately. These pop-up messages may be scary for computer users who will not know what is going on. PC security analysts advise computer users not to panic; in its current version, the Smash Ransomware is entirely harmless. The following are the six pop-up messages that are displayed in the Smash Ransomware attack:

'Welcome
Hi and welcome to

Welcome
the Smash! Ransomware

Welcome
I thought i would lay here all alone.

Welcome
But now…

Welcome
Your are here!:)

WeHSnX
So Welcome to HELL. Pay or your files die!'

Each of the pop-up messages will include an OK button. When computer users click on this button in the last message, a ransom note will pop-up, which asks for a seven-digit code to remove the Smash Ransomware. This pop-up also includes a menacing timer, which claims that the victim's files will be killed. Oddly, the Smash Ransomware does not provide any means for carrying out payment. The Smash Ransomware's ransom note does not include an email address, a BitCoin transaction link or address, or any other means to pay the supposed ransom. The Smash Ransomware also will claim to delete the victim's files but, at this time, it does not have this functionality, despite its display of a countdown timer and other misleading information.

Features of the Smash Ransomware Attack

The Smash Ransomware does have some threatening features that can be quite irritating. The Smash Ransomware will block access to the Windows Registry Editor, Regedit, the Task Manager, the Command Prompt and CMD. The Smash Ransomware will display pop-up messages whenever the computer users try to gain access to this content. The following are the pop-up messages that appear when computer users try to access these Windows utilities:

'Taskmgr not available.
No TaskManager for you.

Regedit not available.
No Registery Editor for you.'

Dealing with the Smash Ransomware

Fortunately, dealing with the Smash Ransomware is not particularly difficult. Computer users should simply restart their computers. The Smash Ransomware does not have one of the most basic functions of threats: persistence, which allows them to remain active on the victim's computer when the affected computer starts up. After restarting the infected machine, computer users can simply remove the Smash Ransomware with the help of a reliable security program that is capable of detecting and deleting with the Smash Ransomware infection.

When dealing with the Smash Ransomware, PC security analysts advise computer users not to panic. Like many other low-level threats, the Smash Ransomware is more bluster than threat. The Smash Ransomware cannot carry out many of the things it threatens to do on the victim's computer. Threats like the Smash Ransomware, which capitalizes on real ransomware Trojans, have appeared in increasing numbers in the last year. This is in part due to a large amount of ransomware Trojans that are active currently. Since the Smash Ransomware is clearly unfinished, it also may be possible that a new version of the Smash Ransomware will be released in the future, which will be capable of carrying out all of its threats.
