'Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus' Details
The Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus is one of the many variants of the Ukash Virus. The Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus in particular targets computers located in Spain (the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus detects the infected computer’s location by using the victim’s IP and other network information). Like its many variants, the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus uses a message written in terrible Spanish (probably written using an automated translation tool) to blackmail the victim. Variants of the Ukash Virus are known for using targeted ransom messages written in the victim’s country’s language (often with numerous spelling and grammatical errors), and impersonating a law enforcement agency or government institution associated with the infected computer’s location. The Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus impersonates the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias, a program of the Spanish police used for computer related offenses.
Like the many variants of the Ukash Virus, the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus is a Winlocker that blocks access to the infected computer’s files and Windows components. When the victim logs into Windows, the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus displays a full screen message that cannot be removed. This message demands the payment of a one hundred euro fine due to computer related offenses. Of course, since the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus has absolutely no relationship with the Spanish police force, ESG security researchers strongly advise against paying this supposed fine. This is part of a well known scam with dozens of variants, typically targeting computers in specific geographical locations.
Some computer users may be tempted to pay the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus fine just to remove this irritating Winlocker from their computer. ESG security researchers advise not doing this, mostly due to the fact that paying the ransom will do nothing to remove the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus infection from your computer or to return access to the infected computer. Rather, ESG security researchers advise computer users to circumvent the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus using an alternative boot source and starting up Windows in Safe Mode with a Command Prompt. This should return access to security software installed on the infected computer. Running a full scan of the infected computer with a reliable, fully-updated anti-malware program should be enough to remove the Oficina Virtual de Denuncias Virus infection permanently.
