What are Browser Plugins?

Browser plugins (sometimes called plugins, plug-ins, addin, add-in, addon, add-on, snap-in or snapin) are additional pieces of software that add extra capabilities to your web browser, such as the ability to view movies, run Java applets, or see Flash animations. Applications support plugins for many reasons. Some of the main reasons include:

• To enable third-party developers to create capabilities to extend an application.
• To support features yet unforeseen.
• To reduce the size of an application.
• To separate source code from an application because of incompatible software licenses.

Unfortunately, since plugins run with all the privileges of real applications, they can do absolutely anything to your computer. This means you should never agree to install a plug-in unless you have a very good reason to trust the source.
