The results are in! Alaskan residents are more likely to be victimized by spyware or adware infections, according to the just release Spyhunter Geographic Index. The Spyhunter Spyware Threat Research Team recently analyzed Enigma’s infected-PC reports and our software sales data for all 50 U.S. states to determine the PC “infection rate” for each state.

To compile the Spyhunter Geographic Index, we examined our state-by-state sales numbers and infection reports for all of 2007 and year-to-date in 2008 and found, not surprisingly, that the states with the most people had the most infections. In order to get a better sense for which states had the most vulnerable computers, we took the numbers for each state and figured them as a percentage of each state’s population. With that formula, we were able to determine the most accurate “infection rate” for each state.

The top 10 list of states with the most infected PCs (based on a ratio of population to infected PCs from Enigma’s internal sales data) includes:

Alaska

Colorado

New Hampshire

Washington

Wyoming

Hawaii

Maryland

Connecticut

Maine

Nevada

The full list of all 50 states and the District of Columbia is below.

We’ve also compiled a list which ranks the U.S. metropolitan areas with the most infected PCs.

The top 25 spyware-infected computer in the U.S. metropolitan areas (2007 to present) are:

New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island

Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana

Chicago-Naperville-Joliet

Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington

Washington-Arlington-Alexandria

Boston-Cambridge-Quincy

Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington

Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown

Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta

Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach

San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont

Seattle-Tacoma-Bellvue

Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale

Detroit-Warren-Livonia

Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington

Denver-Aurora

San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos

Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater

Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario

Baltimore-Towson

St. Louis

Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton

Pittsburgh

Orlando-Kissimmee

Kansas City

Spyware, trojans, worms, malware, cookies and other types of computer infections continue to increase. And the data we’ve collected shows that spyware is by no means slowing down.

A new wave of spyware makers with financial aspirations are devising more deceitful methods to infect as many computers as they possibly can to extort Internet users out of their money.
