AOL Parasites

What are AOL Parasites?

An AOL parasite is a malicious computer program designed to harm users of specific America Online software, especially AOL Instant Messenger (or AIM). It can also affect users of different applications such as ICQ messenger. An AOL parasite takes advantage of specific AOL software weaknesses in order to attack or flood a computer running it; stealing particular passwords, account details and other valuable information. An AOL parasite may also log all keystrokes and capture online conversations.

Some AOL parasites do not affect the system to which they are installed. These hazards are created to compromise remote computers and are often used by hackers for various malicious purposes. A presence of such parasites on a regular computer means that the system was successfully attacked and is no under the offending parties’ control.
